Excellent post Vanessa and I’m in alignment with your comments. I find that you need a trusted community coordinator which social artistry skills ( a term that Etienne Wenger uses) as well as the ability to bring in domain experts to create a learning agenda to allow for the critical community cultivation techniques and activities to flourish.
I just stumbled on your blog and like what I see so far.
I really appreciate this post. Having worked with clients on many community building efforts, including both b2b and b2c communities, I agree with you. The idea that publishing member content is ALWAYS the way to go just doesn’t match with the value for participants.
I think one more point to make that ties nicely to your three pillars, particularly when it comes to selectivity, is creating network of peers. Speaking from experience, C level executives are much more open about their business challenges with a set of peers, their other C level executives (CIO, CFO, etc.) than they are if they know anyone can join.

Thanks Lauren and Heather for your comments. Lauren, I too am a fan of Wenger’s work!
